Birth recovery

For Mother

After giving birth, the body has to recover from both the changes made during pregnancy and from the effects of delivery. New mothers may suffer from aches and pains and can be left feeling ‘out of sorts’ after the labour experience.

The mother’s pelvis is often pulled out of balance particularly after a difficult delivery. If stirrups were used either during the birth or to facilitate stitching afterwards, this may leave the pelvic ligaments over-stretched and the pelvis out of alignment.

Unresolved childbirth stresses in the mother can contribute to ongoing back problems, stress incontinence, fatigue, constipation and headaches.

Post Natal Depression

The sacrum is connected to the meninges or coverings of the brain and spinal cord and, if the sacrum is pulled out of position during labour it can impose a drag directly into the brain. This may contribute to feelings of sadness and the ‘baby blues.

Caring for the Baby

Activities such as feeding in poor positions, lifting the car seat in and out, nappy changing and carrying the baby can all place enormous strain on the back.

CranioSacral Therapy Can Help

The gentle, hands-on therapy can support the mother’s return to normality, both physically and emotionally after the birth by releasing strains left over from the pregnancy and labour, allowing the mother to relax and better enjoy the experience of motherhood.

Common Difficulties

In the first few months, the most common difficulties are with feeding, sleeping and crying. Any baby who presents as unsettled and struggling to feed may be uncomfortable from the effects of their birth.

Unresolved birth stresses may contribute to many different problems for your growing child including sleep and behavioural issues, vulnerability to repeated infections such as chest, ear & sinusitis. Later on, headaches and lack of concentration in class can also be attributed to birth strain.

Many CranioSacral Therapists specialise in the treatment of babies and children using this gentle, non-manipulative therapy. It is safe for even the newest of new born and it is never too early to book an appointment and seek support. For information and appointments: 01206 843 153 / 07713485110
